Driving on the Edge

If you didn't catch my first experience, you can read it here. Most of that post is spent on trying to relate how intense high performance driving on a road course can be. This time was different. I wasn't white knuckled or cringing while barreling into a corner at high speed. Instead I was calm, relaxed, even joking with my instructor while driving... but, the difference is that this time the driving was faster and more "out of control" than before.

I wasn't really out of control of course, I never went off the track or anything. I guess I mean it looks (or would feel) out of control to someone looking at it from the outside. I was comfortable pushing the car past it's limits on practically every corner, which generally means a light, correctable skid. I had gotten past the exhilaration of going fast on a track and was relaxed enough to start feeling the car. I could feel when it was at its limits and I could choose to push it into a slide or back off. Which leads me to my next topic...

I think I figured out my driving style. I don't want to say "reckless" because that implies irresponsibility. Safety is always number one, especially when other cars are nearby. But when I feel it is "safe", I will almost always choose to kick the rear end out and correct for it. I think it's fun. :)

Most Beautiful Cars of All Time

Our search for the most beautiful cars was primarily guided by one criterion - undoubtful and unmistakable beauty, as much as it is possible to use that term when referring to cars. It is a rather ungrateful theme, since beauty is very subjective and impossible to generalize. For some, there can be no match to old timers, while on the other side there are car enthusiasts who believe that car design has never been more perfect than today. Just think of the Rolls-Royce, Pagani Zonda, McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo and many other. How can they be compared to Ferrari Dino, Talbot-Lago, Jaguar, Porsche Spyder, Duesenberg etc.? We hope that you approve of our choice and feel free to add your personal best in the

Australian Muscle cars

Three big manufacturers were dominating the market in Australia, Ford Australia, Holden or Holden Dealer Team (by then part of General Motors) and Chrysler Australia. Muscle cars industry actually took a different turn in Australia, they were cars especially designed to race in the Bathurst 500—then known as the Armstrong 500 (miles) race and later the Hardie Ferodo 500. Back then, muscle cars were supercars in every possible way, sheltering big powerful engines and a wide range of other racing options. The demise of these muscle cars were brought about by the racing rules of the time being that 200 examples had to be sold to the general public before the car could qualify. In 1972 this rule came to a head and the Government stepped in to ban muscle cars from the streets.

How To Tell If A Car Has Been Flooded

We get tropical storms and Hurricanes in the southeast that flood thousands of cars annually. Where do these cars end up? In your driveway as a used car. This is the biggest complaint of buying used cars. In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita & Wilma flooded thousands of cars in Florida and the Gulf Coast. In 2004, Hurricanes, Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne battered the Southeastern United States. In 6/2001, tropical storm Allison flooded thousands of cars in Houston. Many were totaled and have their titles branded by insurance companies as "Flooded". Here's some tell tale signs to check for flood damage.

  • Look for water lines on the engine. Imagine a car sitting in a few feet of water, where would the water lines be? On the radiator, the engine, the wheel wells, inside the car, but they may have cleaned the engine. Examine it on a lift.

  • A VIN decoder should tell you if equipment is missing on the car.

  • New carpeting or upholstery. No one re-carpets their car for no reason. Lift the carpet and look for a mess underneath. They don't always do a good job cleaning. Look for mold, or a damp musty smell. Check for rust by the door hinges, and look in the trunk under the mats. Check the spare tire and crow bar, make sure they are not rusted.

  • Use a mirror to check under the seat. If the metal has been contact with moisture, the metal rusts quickly.

  • Check the air intake filter. Some people are such losers that they don't even bother to replace the soaked air filter, so you'll see debris like grass, twigs, and papers on the filter or inside the air intake opening.
